around for school children to use. So teaching them about computer science was all worksheet-orientated. Now 25 years later, Professor Bell (above) has won an international award for his

A community meeting will be held tomorrow, with a key focus being the future of the Roy Stokes Hall which is on the site. There is concern the hall will be also demolished as part of any new development on the Seaview Rd site. Said Renew Brighton manager Sylvia Smyth: “The hall was built for and has always functioned as both a community and school asset. It has been a treasured by the community for over 40 years, including serving as an emergency centre after the February, 2011, earthquake.” “The site is destined for sale and the community have not been consulted at all in this process. We have asked for a pause in this process so that the community has the space and time to decide what comes next,” said Miss Smyth. Renew Brighton will host tomorrow’s meeting with the Christchurch Circus Trust, which leases the hall. •Turn to page 8

THERE’S ANOTHER Warren Hawke surf book for the coffee table this Christmas. The evergreen New Brighton photographer has just published another gem, full of surfers and other local surfing tidbits (see page 7). It takes an in depth look at Scarborough Beach with its specialist Malibu-style waves, surfing personalities, local board riding clubs and international surfing event, ‘The Single Fin Mingle’. New Brighton, Waikuku and a secret bay on Banks Peninsula also feature. The bay hasn’t been named in the book. Hawke said he wants to keep it for the surfers who know how good it is. Fair enough Warren, I’ll keep a lid on it too in this column for those who have gone there for many years. I’m sure those who can ride those pretty impressive waves won’t want it congested. –Barry Clarke

Rockabilly venue in doubt By Sophie Cornish ROCKABILLY Show and Shine’s future at Rawhiti Domain may be in doubt. The annual event which brings more than 8000 people to the domain may have to find a new venue if the Christchurch Archery Club get their wish. Event organiser Robbie Baigent (left) said for the past two years organisers have fought to keep the event at the domain and have struggled to find a suitable date for next year’s event. Mr Baigent was required to confirm the dates for the event with every group which uses the domain. All agreed to support the event, except for the archery club, which said no to every date organisers put forward, Mr Baigent said. “For us to change these dates, it will split our audience and attendees making the event nonviable for us and in course taking away from our community,” Mr Baigent said.
ISSUES: For the Rockabilly’s Show and Shine event held at Rawhiti Domain if they continue to clash with the Christchurch Archery Club which has concerns about noise and health and safety. The archery club suggested one date to the Rockabilly organisers; however, it was not suitable for them. The club has concerns for noise and health and safety. Club president Dave Henshaw said the group wants to work with all parties involved to reach a suitable outcome, however, noise is a big concern. “Our events are controlled by what is called a national judge and the national judge is the person who can say ‘yay’ or ‘nay’ if anything goes wrong because
of certain safety requirements and noise. The archers need to hear any controls for safety that are shouted out by the national judge.” Mr Henshaw said the noise at the recent event was “exceptional.” “We could not have held a national event on that day because of the noise. However, we are still trying to come to grips with it and find a way we can accommodate all,” said Mr Henshaw. The group called noise control

on the event which took place on November 11. The city council completed noise testing and found the event met with noise requirements. Mr Baigent is calling on the community to let the city council know how much the event means for New Brighton. He submitted an application to city council on Friday to secure a date for next year’s event. More than $5000 was raised from this year’s event to go back into the community.

In Brief BADLY DAMAGED ROADS The city council is currently preparing the next Long Term Plan. Coastal-Burwood Ward councillor David East said this is the best time to address the issue of roading. Cr East is asking for residents of east Christchurch to help him compile a list of the five worst roads in the area that need repairs. He will then collate the results and present a list to city council in order of priority. RABBIT UPDATE No decision has been made on the fate of the rabbits on the Anzac Drive/Travis Rd/New Brighton Rd rounabouts. New Zealand Transport Agency media manager Frances Adank said it is yet to be decided whether the rabbits will be culled or caught and released. There have been recent concerns about adults and children crossing the busy roads to look at the rabbits. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED SeniorNet New Brighton is at crossroads as to whether it stays or goes. After 16 years of computer tuition to ages 55+, the group is now looking for more volunteers and members if it wants to continue. Secretary Phyllis Seymour said the group is desperate for more volunteers to help share their computer skills.

Your Local Views End the stigma around epilepsy November is Epilepsy Awareness Month, CoastalBurwood Ward city councillor Glenn Livingstone speaks about his experience with the condition I was first diagnosed with epilepsy at 19. I’m now 54 and have not let the condition hold me back, in fact I’ve used it as a springboard to set goals and achieve them. Leading up to the diagnosis, I could not work out why I was having uncontrollable twitches when falling asleep. At a 1983 Youth Easter Camp I had a seizure, where I blacked out and was taken to hospital with concussion and a suspected broken nose. My worried parents waited while an electroencephalogram revealed the spikes of the ‘extra’ electricity in my brain. Following this, I was diagnosed with myoclonic epilepsy. I was put on medication, which I’ve remained on since, in order to keep the epilepsy under control. One of the consequences of this newly-acquired condition was
not being able to drive for two years. It also meant cycling with a helmet. Cycling wearing a yellow helmet in Palmerston North in 1983 was a novel experience for everyone, both me and the locals. “Hey skid-lid”, or “moon-head”
were all part of the experience of passing motorists in Palmy. Shortly after I was diagnosed and told someone about it, they said: “Oh, you’re an epileptic.” It was that labelling that was to become the impetus for me to set goals and pursue them. In February, I will be taking part in my seventh Coast to Coast event with MP Poto Williams. If you see someone having a seizure and lying on the ground, ensure that they do not come into contact with any furniture if inside and that they can’t hurt themselves. Once the seizure is finished, depending on the severity of it, check that they’re able to breathe without any obstructions in their mouth. They will probably be able to talk to you but may be a bit groggy. In some cases they may need medical attention but every person and every case is different. Those of us with epilepsy, our family and friends, want to be accepted. We should all work to put an end to the stigma around it. Those of us with epilepsy have extra electricity in our brains! So employ us, be cool with us and above all, give us a chance.

Surf lifesaving trailer thefts By Sophie Cornish SPECIALISED SURF lifesaving trailers have been stolen from a storage shed in New Brighton. The thefts have angered Surf Life Saving New Zealand, which says it won’t be able to replace them for the summer. Said SLSNZ sports manager Scotty Roberts: “For the last 15 years, we’ve never had any problems, but in the last two weeks, we’ve been hit by two breakins and case of Scotty vandalism.” Roberts “All the stuff that we have in there we have to fund for, so even as a national body, we still fund for gear and, yes, it’s all insured . . . it’s just more the inconvenience and the fact that they are stealing from a voluntary organisation whose job is to help and save people,” said Mr Roberts. Two SLSNZ trailers were stolen from the Owles Tce compound on October 29. Following this, security was increased and new locks were added. Then, on November 6, another break-in occurred, this time the

lock, so they let the tyres down. Paddles and a laptop were also taken from a Waka Ama storage facility next door on the same night. Police are asking for anyone who may know anything about the thefts or the whereabouts of the trailers to come forward.

THE SOUTHSHORE Residents Association is looking for funding for an automated external defibrillator. Currently in the Southshore and South New Brighton communities, there is only one AED available at South New Brighton School which can be used during school hours. The residents’ association has identified the need for another one which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The next closest option for an AED is in New Brighton, where there are six.
South Brighton Holiday Park is willing to host the AED, if funding is granted. The residents’ association has submitted an application to the Coastal-Burwood Community Board’s Discretionary Response Fund, however, the city council is recommending the community board decline the application for $2900. There are around 500 houses in Southshore and 1700 in South New Brighton. The 2017/2018 Discretionary Response Fund has a total budget of $93,838 and $20,750 has been granted to date.

Surfing identities feature in new book SOUTHSHORE’S Dylan Wood is among local surfers and identities in a new Warren Hawke book. NZ Surf: The Collection – Vol 1 takes an in-depth look at surfing in New Zealand and New Brighton is a common feature. The coffee table book containing more than 500 photos and 60,000 words features surfing events, including The Ray White New Brighton Duke Festival of Surfing. The festival has quickly grown to become the biggest surfing competition in New Zealand, said Mr Hawke. There is a section dedicated to New Brighton Boardriders life member Iain Buchanan, a five time New Zealand Open Champion who is currently travelling the world as a head judge on the European and Hawaiian legs of the World Qualifying Series and as the ‘Priority Judge’ on The World Championship Tour. The section provides insight into what it takes to compete at this level. The pier features several times including a photographic piece entitled Moods of The Pier which features shots of several local New Brighton surfers on big waves breaking along both sides of the pier. Mr Hawke considers the pier to be an excellent platform to shoot off. “In the right conditions the surf can look world class.
Capturing the best action with interesting light is always a goal and sometimes it all comes together if you are persistent,” said Mr Hawke. Surfer Keiry Bennett, labelled by Mr Hawke as a ‘local celebrity,’ also features. Mr Bennett first surfed New Brighton beach on hollow plywood boards in the late 1950s and is now the owner of Exit Surf in Ferrymead. It is Mr Warren’s second surfing book, published by CPL Media in Auckland, which specialises in beach and surfing publications. The book has a limited print run with the plan to sell it out and do no reprint. Copies of the book are available from local surf and clothing shops as well as good book shops.

“I was aware from my son about the people before me, in particular a cop, who came along with his car and a nurse who brought fake blood, so as a computer scientist the challenge was getting kids to actually be interested in computer science.

“But then it went down really well and I kept being invited back for more sessions,” said Prof Bell (left). The challenge was to find an engaging and interesting way to teach computer science, something Prof Bell was determined to achieve.

Former Brighton school site could be sold to developers •From page 1 The school was closed at the end of 2015. The Ministry of Education is in the process of disposing of the site. Crown agencies and Nagi Tahu have said no to buying it, leaving the way clear for private developers to move in. The hall was completed in 1977 after a large fundraising effort from the school committee, which raised $108,000 of the $150,000 it cost to establish the hall. “Hundreds” of members of the community took part in the fund-raising effort, led by the school’s committee chairman Roy Stokes, said Miss Smyth. The school committee, along with members of the community, ran housie nights twice a week for 15 years to raise the money.

Raechel Keepa ran the Tarawera 50k ultra-marathon on November 11 in a ‘mamas’ dress to raise funds for Marine Reach medical ships. A ‘mamas’ dress is traditionally known as an aelan dress and is long and made almost entirely from polyester material, making it hot and bulky. “My dress was a common topic of conversation along the way with people taking photos of my give-a-little blog I had pinned to my hydration pack, to supporters along the way giving me donations when stopping at aid stations,” said Mrs Keepa. Mrs Keepa is a nurse and has served on one of the ships, Pacific Hope, twice both in 2016 and this year. The ships serve isolated communities with care from dentists, doctors, nurses, occupational therapists and physiotherapists. Her love for the people of Vanuatu pushed forward with the challenging task. “The Ni Van people steal a

Avonside actress takes award in her film about broken friendship By Sophie Cornish AN AVONSIDE Girls’ High student won best actress in a film she created about her experience with losing a friend. Zoe Rhoades and classmate, Charlotte Stringer, produced a short film, Comfort Food, which was screened at The School Shorts: Screen Competition 2017. The film follows the main character Hazel (Zoe) through her journey of grief and self discovery after her close friend said she wanted to end the friendship. The film competition was run for the first time this year and organised by secondary school media teachers and the New Zealand Broadcasting School.
The year 12 students believe the issue is not often touched on in mainstream films. “I think, typically, romantic break-ups are generally portrayed in films, but it’s not as common to see friendship break-ups,” said Zoe. “These break-ups are generally under-valued in society, yet it can affect all parts of your life, just the same way romantic relationships do.” Zoe was shocked to receive the prize for her first acting performance, which was “pretty unexpected”. The films in the compeititon were required to be no longer than 7min and the finalists’ films

were screened at Hoyts Riccarton. Zoe received a $100 cash prize. Avonside Girls’ High School media studies teacher Rob Lay was involved in organising the competition and hopes it will start an annual Canterbury-wide film festival for secondary school students. A similar film festival called Invision ran from 2004-2010 before being disrupted by the earthquakes. Zoe also won the overall prize for the top student in media studies for year 12 at Avonside. The best film award went to a St Andrew’s College film titled Beginners.
Pupils get chairs for hospital By Sophie Cornish RAWHITI SCHOOL pupils have raised more than $4500 for chairs for Christchurch Hospital. The pupils, aged 5 and 6 raised the money for three Devon recliner chairs for the children’s ward. Deputy principal Helen Hogarth said the initiative was part of the social science curriculum which focused on “playing our part to make the community a better place.” The pupils held a mufti-day, spellathon and a market day to raise funds. Some even raised money in their own time. “Some of the pupils were having lemonade stalls outside their house and making things and selling them to people who were passing by. Of course, as soon as
people found out what they were doing, they were giving them $20 for a cup of lemonade,” said Mrs Hogarth. Originally the 105 students were raising money for just one chair. “In the end we raised enough for three chairs and we were totally blown away,” said Mrs Hogarth. Mrs Hogarth said the enthusiasm from the students was what made the fundraising go further. “They loved it. They were so engaged in what they were doing. They were coming to school early wanting to work on their market day arts and crafts. They were working on it through their break times. They were so enthusiastic about it.” The chairs cost $1500 plus GST and will be used by families staying in the children’s ward.

STRAWBERRY AND MARSHMALLOW PARFAIT Ingredients
Whole leg of lamb 1-2 tbsp oil Rock salt Freshly ground black pepper 4-5 sprigs fresh rosemary
½ cup Marshmallows, small 350g Sugar 500g Strawberries, hulled 6 Eggs, 4 yolks, 2 whole 2 cups Cream, thick 500g Strawberries, fresh, for garnish
Take the lamb out of the fridge 30min before cooking to allow it to come to room temperature. Preheat the oven to 170 deg C. Place a wire rack in a roasting tray, place the lamb on the rack and brush the meat with the oil and then season with the rock
Directions To prepare the tin, line a narrow terrine mould about 30cm x 10cm with plastic wrap. Set some of the marshmallows along the bottom with some strawberry slices. Place the strawberries in a saucepan with half the sugar. Bring to a gentle simmer over a low heat. The juices will come out, so there is no need to add water. Simmer for no more than 2min, then remove from the heat and mash or purée the mixture. Return it to the pan and set aside. Use an electric beater to whisk the egg yolks and whole eggs with the remaining sugar until thick and mousse-like. Return the strawberry and sugar
mixture to the heat and bring to a simmer. With the beater still running, tip this hot mixture into the eggs and continue whisking until it is really thick and well incorporated. The hot sugar and strawberries “cook” the egg yolk, so it is not raw. Whip the cream until it reach-

Remove the lamb from the oven, cover the meat with some aluminum foil and then set the lamb aside to rest, for approximately 15-20min. Carve the meat and serve with your favourite vegetables and plenty of gravy.
